General Information

Reporting to the Eastern Region Director and working closely with the TransCanada Corporate Technical Centre Senior Industrial Safety Specialist, the successful candidate will be the main contact for health and safety issues for the Eastern Region and will be responsible for, but not limited to, the following duties/activities:


  • Anticipating the needs of customers and providing a high level of customer service by ensuring effective processes are in place and providing safety expertise to help facilitate business decisions;
  • Champion the HSE initiatives, processes and procedures in the region and monitor/coach for appropriate behaviors and attitudes;
  • Work closely with TransCanada Technical Centre safety Specialists/Coordinators, employees and managers to impart the knowledge and skills necessary to recognize process and occupational safety hazards;
  • Regular field visits to station/pipeline work sites to ensure health, safety and environmental standards are maintained and enforced;
  • Participate in Pre-Job and Tailgate meeting while at Job Sites with a specific focus on input/feedback on Job Safety Analysis for quality and completeness;
  • Participate in planned facility inspections and make recommendations for improvement and mitigation;
  • Prepare / provide safety training and awareness presentations at Operations meetings including reviewing IIT’s (internal Incident Reporting System) for accuracy – Investigate incidents to determine root cause and determine appropriate mitigation to minimize incident recurrence;
  • Conduct facility sound surveys and ergonomic assessments;
  • Participate /support Regional JHSEC (Joint HSE Committee) as an HSE resource;
  • Work with internal and external stakeholders to ensure project goals are adequately communicated;
  • Work with Regional Senior Industrial Safety Specialist and TransCanada’s Community, Safety & Environment group to address safety related issues;
  • Maintain safety documentation and records to meet regulatory requirements as well as to provide data for problem solving and decision making;
  • Track emerging regulatory changes, industry trends and issues for the purpose of developing recommendations to key stakeholders;
  • Conduct required safety reporting, preparation of monthly safety statistics, trending and presentation to Management Team;
  • Liaising with contractors, management, industry associations and other external stakeholders to ensure business needs are understood and met;
  • Periodic on-site safety audits and inspections of work performed on projects to ensure TC safety standards and local regulations are followed by construction and inspection personnel at all times.

Qualifications and Education/Experience


  • Strong technical safety expertise (risk management and safety management systems, loss control management, hazard identification, incident investigations, emergency preparedness and response, design engineering);
  • Travel required (primarily in Ontario and Quebec) approx. 5-10 days/month;
  • High level of analytical ability and strategic thinking required to gather and evaluate complex information obtained from a variety of sources and to formulate recommendations;
  • Proven ability to make decisions where only general policies and procedures are available requiring application of judgment and independent action;
  • Ability to learn quickly, open to change and focused on continuous improvement;
  • Demonstrated ability to build constructive and effective business relationships;
  • Dedicated to meeting expectations of internal and external clients;
  • Leadership skills to act as a role model, promoting a positive influence on the work of others through demonstration of technical expertise and effective interpersonal skills.
  • Effective communication, writing and public speaking skills.


  • Knowledge and understanding of past and emerging HS&E issues both internally and externally;
  • Post-secondary education in health and safety is an asset;
  • 5 to 10 years of experience in a safety related field;
  • A CRSP professional designation is preferred;
  • Bilingual (English/French) candidate is preferred;
  • Knowledge of Federal, Ontario and Quebec OH&S Legislation.
