Supervisor, Survey & Inspections

Job Summary

Under the direction of the Manager, Technical Services, the successful candidate will manage the Surveys and Inspections unit.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide direct supervision, coaching, support, and training to a team consisting of 45 permanent unionized staff and approximately 35 temporary/seasonal staff
  • Assign and monitor work of the Surveys and Inspections staff on a daily basis
  • Recruit, supervise and coach staff including labour relations responsibilities
  • Ensure provision of required safety and technical training for staff. The Supervisor may be directly responsible for providing some elements of the training
  • Ensure that safety precautions are taken and that safety equipment is worn at all times
  • Identify and develop improvements to current processes and procedures, with a view of improving effectiveness, operations, performance, efficiency and customer service
  • Order adequate materials and field supplies for Surveys and Inspections staff
  • Conducts site inspections and investigations, and provide follow-up as required
  • Develop long term objectives and career goals for team members
  • Liaise with internal and external stakeholders as required
  • Represent the Surveys and Inspections Unit at various internal and external meetings including pre-construction meetings
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

Skills and Qualifications

  • Must have successfully completed a College Civil Engineering Technology program and possess a C.Tech or C.E.T. designation with OACETT
  • Must have a minimum of five years of progressive experience in the construction and maintenance of municipal services infrastructure
  • A minimum of two years of supervisory experience in a unionized environment is preferred
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and ability to provide guidance and direction to staff while motivating and fostering a strong team
  • Excellent verbal communication and interpersonal skills to effectively deal with residents, elected officials, contractors, developers, utility companies and external agencies
  • Effective decision making and problem solving skills with the ability to determine an effective course of action that drives progression and resolution
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple competing tasks to meet deadlines
  • Must be committed to working in a team based environment with focus on continuous improvement through innovation and enhancement of processes
  • Must act with integrity and demonstrate sound moral and ethical principles
  • Excellent computer skills with a proficiency using MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and MS Outlook
  • Good working knowledge and experience with INFOR Public Sector and SAP would be an asset
  • Experienced with City of Mississauga and OPSS construction standards and specifications
  • Demonstrated understanding and interpretation of collective agreements, Occupational Health & Safety Act, and City policies and procedures is an asset
  • A valid Ontario Class ‘G’ driver’s license and availability of personal vehicle
