Director Resident Care (Ontario)

Chartwell Retirement Residences

This is a Contract position in Mississauga, ON posted January 13, 2022.

The Director of Resident Care will be responsible for proactively supporting and managing care programs and services that, not only meet applicable legislation requirements and safety standards, but also meet the evolving needs of residents in our retirement homes.


The Director will be responsible for the overall operation and administration of the Regional care team in Ontario and programs, including all aspects of direct service, education, training. The role will provide leadership in operational plans that effectively support resident care delivery.  This includes supporting our fee for service care delivery models.   She/he is responsible for linking clinical priorities to budget allocations.


The position reports directly to the Senior Director of Care and enables a culture of high quality, resident focused care, strong management skills, accountability for results and continuous improvement and innovation. 


The ideal candidate will bring an exceptional ability to lead and mentor others, share knowledge and engage our Health and Wellness Managers and their care staff in our 90 retirement homes across Ontario.




The responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to the following:



·       Ensure the highest standard of resident care and quality of life is provided to the residents through the support and maintenance of appropriate care programs, effective supervision of the performance of the provincial team and care staff.


·       Provide leadership in the standardization and implementation of our care services delivery model.


·       Lead, inspire, coach and mentor a team of care managers and leaders to create conditions that support Chartwell’s unique value proposition – the Customer Experience.


·       Contribute to the execution of a workforce/talent strategy that ensures high quality staff are recruited and selected, succession is continuously addressed, and resources are deployed to meet all operational requirements in their department.


·       Ensure appropriate education and training so that consistent quality care can be delivered to residents in Chartwell’s Ontario Retirement Residences.


·       Provide exceptional clinical assessment and decision-making skills.


·       Demonstrate exceptional leadership qualities and problem-solving skills as well as oral and written communication skills.


·       Work closely with the Ontario Platform Leads and other care team members to ensure consistent quality care of residents.


·       Ensure Resident Care, Nursing Documentation, Pharmacy, and Infection Prevention and Control policies and procedures are kept current and effectively ensure regulatory compliance with all applicable legislation and standards of the Ontario College of Nurses for nursing care service delivery.


·       Ensure that optimal safety standards are maintained in our homes.


·       Oversee the recruitment, continuing education, performance review and feedback, recognition and empowerment of staff within their department to meet objectives.


·       Is an ambassador and role model with the community, residents, visitors, staff, and volunteers.





The ideal candidate will possess: 


The Director of Resident Care will have a minimum of 5 years of experience in a clinical leadership role in either the retirement, long-term care sector or in an equivalent setting that supports seniors.  


            The Director of Resident Care will have experience in the following areas: 


           Coaching and providing support to registered and unregistered care staff (RN’s, RPN’s PSWs, Guest Attendants).


           Understanding the role of the UCP (Unregulated Care Providers) and medication administration.


           Professional knowledge and experience in seniors housing and operational management skills


           Sound knowledge and background in geriatrics, rehabilitation, or retirement care nursing.


           Strong knowledge of the Nursing Regulations under CON, Health Disciplines Act, Pharmacy Act, Food & Drug Canada, Narcotic Control Act (Canada) Public Health Agency and other pertinent provincial, federal and municipal legislation which influence the operation of resident care in retirement communities most specifically nursing care.


           Demonstrated ability to work well independently and in a collaborative team environment


           Demonstrate sound decision making to mitigate risk and identify and understanding when to elevate a concern to include emergency services, and/or notify the Senior Director of Care.


           Demonstrated ability in leadership, interpersonal skills, creative resolutions, and communication.


           Proven business, team building, education, coaching


           A demonstrated understanding and alignment with Chartwell’s Vision and Values. 





           Must have a Current registration as a Registered Nurse with the provincial College of Nurses


           Demonstration of continuing education in relevant topics such as gerontology, infection prevention and control, falls prevention, health care systems, clinical leadership, education in Nursing.


           Knowledge of the Retirement Homes Act and Regulations

           Must have the skills to effectively plan and evaluate the delivery of services to residents.


           Must possess excellent organizational skills


           Proficient in Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, and Power Point programs.


           Perform other related duties as required



Regulatory Compliance:


           Ensure that the Ontario Care Department is operated efficiently and in compliance with all Provincial Health Legislation, RHRA standards and Regulations and, other pertinent legislated standards and requirements. 


           Ensure that the regulations under the Occupational Health & Safety Act of Ontario are implemented.


           Ensure the maintenance of appropriate programs of orientation and staff development for care staff including Occupational Health and Safety.


           Ensure that optimal safety standards are maintained in the care department. 


           Delegate responsibilities to the appropriate qualified staff according to the applicable legislation and standards of the College of Nurses of Ontario.



            Working Conditions


           Work is generally performed in an office environment.


           Travel to residences is required.
